Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India, passes away

Pranab Mukherjee, former Indian president and senior Congress leader passes away at the age of 84 at Army Research & Referral Hospital, New Delhi on 31st August 2020. He was in a medical complication and was in life support since operation upon to remove a clot in the brain. In a deep coma since his brain surgery on August 10, Mukherjee had also tested positive for COVID-19 during the treatment. The news of his demise was announced on Twitter by his son Abhijit Mukherjee former Lok Sabha MP.




7-day national mourning declared

The Government of India announces with profound sorrow the death of Shri Pranab Mukherjee, former President of India at Army Research & Referral Hospital, New Delhi on 31st August 2020.
As a mark of respect to the departed dignitary, seven days State Mourning will be observed throughout India from 31.08.2020 to 06.09.2020, both days inclusive. During the period of State Mourning, the National Flag will fly at half-mast on all buildings throughout India, where it is flown regularly and there will be no official entertainment.
The date, time and venue of the State Funeral will be intimated later.


Mr. Mukherjee was born in 1935 in Mirati, West Bengal. He became an MP, in the Rajya Sabha in 1969 on a Congress nomination
Mukherjee served as India's President between 2012 and 2017 and he also held top portfolios — including Finance, Defence and External Affairs— as a senior Congress leader before he was elected President of India. Having served a five-year term as the President, Mukherjee refused to contest again citing health concerns.
